Samsung’s AI voice assistant, Bixby, is undoubtedly one of the best-performing smart assistants that come with Samsung Galaxy devices. It can answer simpler to very complex questions, and control your device by just using a few words, reading and analyzing contents such as texts and images, and much more.

However, a lot of users of Bixby have reported that they are experiencing issues with its wake-up command. According to them, the system does not recognize or respond to “Hi, Bixby” or “Bixby”, and the voice assistant does not show up, making them incredibly frustrated.

This issue even exists on the latest Samsung Galaxy S22 and S23 devices and that is why we decided to give this complete guide.

So if Bixby voice wake-up is not working on your Samsung Galaxy smartphone/tablet, this guide will help you fix the issue, keep reading…

Fix 01: Re-enable Bixby’s Voice Wake Up

Your phone or tablet comes with Bixby’s voice wake-up enabled by default, However, by a software update or system setting change, this may have turned off on your device, and that is probably why Bixby does not respond to its wake-up command.

To fix this, all you have to do is enable Bixby’s voice wake up. If it is already enabled, you can then re-enable it just to make sure there are no glitches causing it to not work.

So here is how you can do that:

  1. Open Bixby.
  2. Tap on three dots at the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. Tap on Voice wake up.
  4. Re-enable “Wake with Hi, Bixby” toggle.

Fix 02: Enable Microphone Permission for Bixby

In order to receive voice inputs from you and respond, Bixby needs to access your device’s microphone.

So if it doesn’t have permission to use the microphone, Bixby won’t be able to respond to any voice command, including the wake-up phrase.

So now you know what to do, go to your device’s settings and change the permission state to “Allow,” and here is how exactly you can do that:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap on Bixby voice.
  3. Tap on Permissions.

  1. Tap on Microphone.
  2. Tap on Allow only while using the app.

Fix 03: Improve Bixby’s Voice Detection

If you didn’t know, you can train Bixby to understand your voice more accurately. This can be done by giving your voice records to the AI. Then it will analyze the voice record and adjust its default voice recognition behavior to better understand you.

To do that, follow the steps below, you need to be in a quiet place to do this, and do not use wired or wireless mics/headphones as the mics in these devices can change the pick-up of your voice.

  1. Open Bixby
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap on Voice wake up and then toggle on Recognize voice.

  1. The moment you toggle on the option you will see a voice recording session window. Tap on Start and follow the on-screen instructions.

Once you have set up the voice recognition, you can even adjust its wake-up detection by dragging the wake-up sensitivity level. Set it to medium to a high level for aggressive voice detection.

Fix 04: Allow Bixby to Run on Lock Screen

Most of the time when we wake up Bixby, we do that when the device is on the Lock screen. So if the Bixby cannot run on Lock Screen, then it won’t work and detect your voice.

To fix this, you have to let Bixby to run on lock screen as well, and here is how to do that:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Notifications.

  1. Tap on Lock screen notifications.

To clear the data, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Apps.
  3. Select Bixby voice.
  4. Go to Storage.
  5. Tap on Clear data.

Fix 06: Update Bixby Voice’s Software Version

If clearing its data doesn’t help to fix the issue, then you can check for any updates on Bixby Voice’s service and install them. So if the update contains bug fixes, you will be able to fix the issue easily.

To update Bixby Voice, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap on Bixby.
  3. Then, tap on Bixby voice settings.
  4. Scroll down and tap on About Bixby voice.
  5. Wait for Bixby to check for any available updates.

Fix 07: Update Bixby’s Language & Region Settings

If Bixby’s language and region settings are different from your actual language and region, then it will not work correctly to detect the voice wake-up that you give.

This can be changed by setting up Bixby’s language and region options. Both of these options are located under Bixby settings.

All you have to do is update the current language and region settings. Follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap on Bixby.
  3. Then, tap on Bixby voice settings.
  4. Tap on Bixby country/region.

  1. Select your country.

Fix 08: Do a Software Update

If none of the above solutions worked, then it could be the system of your Galaxy device causing Bixby voice wake-up not working.

The system can interfere with Bixby services, stop them from running in the background, and doesn’t let it use your device microphone.

In order to fix this, you can simply run a software update, just like you did to Bixby Voice in Fix 06.  By installing the latest update, all the system bugs and glitches causing the issue will be resolved.

So here is how you can update your device’s software:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Software update.
  3. Tap on Download and install.
Download and install
