The Edge Lightning on your Samsung Galaxy S21 is a great feature that can enhance your user experience. It provides a visual alert system for incoming notifications such as messages, emails, and reminders by illuminating the edges or around the camera cutout of your S21 screen.

We created this guide to address this edge lightning issue and here we have included all the best working solutions with easy-to-follow instructions to help you fix your device’s Edge Lightning back to working again. Keep reading…

Note: Solutions in this guide will work on any Samsung Galaxy S21 model (S21, S21 Plus, S21 Fe, and S21 Ultra models.)

Editor’s note: We created these instructions using a Samsung Galaxy S21 running Android 13. Depending on your device’s software version, some steps and menu positions may look slightly different.

Fix 01: Change Notification Pop-up Style

The Edge Lighting feature on your Samsung Galaxy S21 works only when the type of notification pop-up style is set to “Brief”.

If you are wondering, what’s the difference between the “Detailed” and “Brief” notification pop-up styles, as the name suggests the “Detailed” style gives you a more detailed notification, showing you more information about the alert

On the other hand, the “Brief” style provides a concise, less detailed notification, which is necessary for the Edge Lighting feature to work.

So, how do you change the notification pop-up style on your Samsung Galaxy S21 to “Brief”? Follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Notifications.
  1. Then tap on Notification pop-up style.

  1. There, you will see two options: “Detailed” and “Brief”.
  2. Select “Brief”.

Once you’ve done this, you’ve set the stage for the Edge Lighting feature to work correctly. But there’s more to do, so let’s move on to the next step.

Fix 02: Configure Brief Notification Pop-up Style

Once you’ve changed the notification pop-up style to “Brief”, you’re ready to enable and configure the Edge Lighting feature on your Samsung Galaxy S21.

However, it’s important to understand that incorrect configurations can prevent Edge Lighting from functioning properly., and miss message notifications, call notifications, etc.

Therefore, it is important to correctly set up the Edge Lighting feature. So follow these steps:

  1. First, tap on select “Apps to show as brief”. The default will be All apps. But if you want only selected apps to work with Edge Lightning, you can configure it here.

  1. Then, tap on “Edge lightning style”. You can choose from a variety of effects, including “Bubble”, “Heart”, “Fireworks”, and more. Choose a noticeable effect that ensures you won’t miss any notifications.

  1. If you want to customize the Edge Lightning further, you have the Colors and Advanced section. We recommend configuring the “Transparency” and “Duration” in a way that you can notice the notifications better.

For instance, you can set the “Transparency” to “low” to make the Edge Lighting more visible and set the “Duration” to “long” to ensure the lighting effect lasts for a noticeable amount of time.

  1. Finally, toggle on the “Show even while the screen is off” option. This allows the Edge Lighting to work even when your screen is off, making sure you never miss a notification.

After you’ve made these changes, restart your Galaxy S21. This will ensure that all the new settings take effect immediately.

Fix 03: Turn Off “Remove Animations”

The “Remove animations” option is a part of the accessibility settings on your Galaxy S21. This option reduces or stops motion on your phone’s screen by removing certain transition effects that can be distracting or unnecessary for some users.

However, “Remove animations” also interferes with the Edge Lighting effect and prevents it from displaying correctly.

Therefore, if you have the “Remove animations” feature enabled, it is the reason why Edge Lighting is not working on your device. Follow these steps to disable this feature:

  1. Go to your device’s Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  3. In the Accessibility menu, tap on Visibility enhancements.

  2. If the toggle next to Remove animations is switched on, tap on it to turn it off.

Fix 04: Turn Off Developer Options

If you don’t know, Developer Options on your Samsung Galaxy S21 has a hidden set of features that are meant for developers to test and debug apps.

However, certain settings within this menu, if misconfigured, can interfere with the normal operation of the Edge Lighting feature.

Any settings that might have been altered can be simply turned off by disabling the developer options. Here is how you can do that:

Note: This fix is for users who already have enabled developer options on their Samsung Galaxy S21.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Developer Options.
  3. On top of the Developer Options, tap on toggle to turn it off.
  4. Now restart your phone.

Fix 05: Reset All Settings

If you’re still experiencing issues with the Edge Lighting, you have to reset all the settings on your Samsung Galaxy S21 to revert all the changes made to the system back to their factory default values

This will fix any misconfigurations causing the Edge Lighting feature to malfunction.

Note: This process will not delete any personal data, such as photos or apps, but it will reset all system settings, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, APN connections, display settings, and system preferences.

Here’s how to reset all settings on your Galaxy S21:

  1. Head over to Settings again.
  2. Go to General management.
  3. Tap on Reset.
  4. Then, tap on Reset all settings.
  5. Confirm.

Once the process is complete, your device will restart. After the restart, the Edge Lighting will start working properly.
