We all know that a smartphone’s microphone is one of the most important components as the display or battery. It’s the key that allows us to make calls, record voice notes, interact with virtual assistants, and more.

But unfortunately, some users have reported the microphone on their Samsung Galaxy S22 stopped working. Some have even tried a couple of fixes but failed to fix the issue.

If you are also experiencing this daunting issue, don’t worry, we have gathered best working solutions to resolve this issue. Whether it’s a minor software glitch or a hardware malfunction, we’ve got you covered.

Note: Solutions in this guide will work on any Samsung Galaxy S22 model (S22, S22 Plus, S22 Fe, and S22 Ultra models.)

Editor’s note: We created these instructions using a Samsung Galaxy S22 running Android 13. Depending on your device’s software version, some steps and menu positions may look slightly different.

Why Microphone is Not Working on Samsung Galaxy S22

There could be several reasons why the microphone on your Samsung Galaxy S22 not working as expected. That said, here are some of the most common causes behind this issue:

  1. Software Glitches: Sometimes, the device’s software might experience glitches or bugs that could interfere with the microphone’s functionality. This could be due to a recent update or even a sudden system error.
  2. Dirt or Debris: The microphone hole on your device is tiny and can easily get blocked by dust. This physical blockage can prevent sound from reaching the microphone.
  3. Hardware Damage: If your device has recently been dropped or exposed to water, the microphone might have been damaged physically.
  4. Outdated Software: This is very rare to happen but if your device’s software is not up-to-date, it might not be compatible with certain apps or features.
  5. Third-Party Apps: This is a lot common issue. Some apps can interfere with your phone’s microphone functionality. This could be due to a conflict between the app and the device’s software or a bug within the app itself.

Fix 01: Restart Your Device

As we said before, minor software glitches or temporary bugs can cause the microphone on your Samsung Galaxy S22 to stop working. One of the simplest and most effective solutions to address such issues is to restart your device.

Follow the steps below to restart your Samsung Galaxy S22:

  1. Press and hold the power key and volume down key together until you get the power menu.
Force restart Samsung
  1. Tap on the restart button.

  1. Confirm by tapping on the restarting button again.

Once your device has restarted, check if the microphone is working properly.

Fix 02: Clean the Microphone

The next fix is cleaning your device’s microphone hole to remove any dust present inside of it. But before proceeding with the cleaning, ensure that your device is powered off. Then, follow the steps below:

  1. Try using a small, soft brush (like a clean toothbrush) to clean the microphone hole gently. Be careful not to push the bristles too far into the hole. It would be better if you can use a compressed air can to blow the dust out of the hole.
  2. After cleaning, power on your device and test the microphone.

Fix 03: Update Device Software

The software of your Galaxy S22 plays a crucial role in the functioning of your device’s hardware, including the microphone.

This is why outdated software can cause glitches and problems and make your microphone not working, as it may not be able to communicate effectively with the newer hardware or apps on your device.

Therefore, follow the steps below and update your device software to see if it fixes the issue:

  1. Head over to Settings.
  2. Tap on Battery and device care.

  1. Then, tap on Download and install.

After the update, check if your microphone is working.

Fix 04: Boot the Device Into Safe Mode

Some third-party apps can interfere with your device’s microphone functionality. This interference can cause your microphone to stop working entirely when that app is running in the background. Booting your device into safe mode helps you identify if this is the case.

When booted into safe mode, it disables all third-party apps and allows you to isolate any issues caused by these apps. If your microphone works fine in safe mode, it’s likely that a third-party app is causing the problem.

Here are the steps to boot your Samsung Galaxy S22 into safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the power button + Volume down buttons until the power off menu appears on the screen.
Force restart Samsung
  1. Tap and hold the Power off option until the Safe mode option appears.
Power off button
  1. Tap Safe mode and wait for your device to restart. You’ll see Safe mode at the bottom left corner of the screen if the process is successful.

Once you’re in safe mode, try using your device’s microphone. If the microphone works, a recently installed app might be the cause of the problem. Once you have identified the issue, simply restart your device to exit safe mode.

To find the problematic app, you’ll need to uninstall your most recently downloaded apps one by one. After each uninstallation, check if your microphone works. If it does, the last app you uninstalled was likely causing the problem.

Fix 05: Take Your Device to a Repair Center

If none of the above solutions has worked to resolve your Galaxy S22’s microphone issue, it might be time to consider taking your Samsung Galaxy S22 to a professional. This is because the problem could be due to a hardware malfunction or damage that can’t be fixed with software troubleshooting.

Before taking your device to a repair center, it’s essential to check if your device is still under warranty. If it is, Samsung may cover the cost of the repair or even replace your device.

We hope this guide helped you in resolving the microphone not working issue on your Samsung Galaxy S22.
