TL;DR

  • Samsung is collaborating with a South Korean fabless chip firm called HiDeep to develop a new S Pen technology.
  • The new stylus technology eliminates the need for a separate digitizer and battery to reduce thickness.
  • Reports say Samsung plans to integrate this technology into future foldable devices.
  • Samsung Display may bundle the new stylus tech with its foldable OLED panels for Chinese smartphone brands.

Samsung previously used Wacom’s technology for their S Pen technology. Now, the company is taking steps toward advancing this technology by collaborating with HiDeep, a South Korean fabless chip firm.

A New Direction for Stylus Technology

According to an ETNews report, Samsung and HiDeep are working on a new stylus technology (stylus – S Pen) that eliminates the need for a separate digitizer and battery. This development will reduce the S Pen thickness while maintaining the user experience.

Currently, Samsung’s S Pen uses Wacom’s Electromagnetic Resonance (EMR) technology. Their technology requires a digitizer which increases the thickness of current and previous S Pens.

Broader Applications and Industry Impact

HiDeep aims to create a universal solution that will become compatible with multiple brands, including Apple. This partnership could allow Samsung to produce thinner foldable smartphones/tablets/laptops with the S Pen in the competitive market.

Also, Samsung Display is to bundle its OLED technology with the new stylus solution. Chinese manufacturers that are focused on ultra-thin foldable designs may find this development particularly temptive because they can then incorporate stylus without compromising device dimensions.
