If you’re a Samsung Galaxy S21 user and have encountered a delay or lag with your device’s camera, you have landed in the right place.

This is not a hardware issue with the camera unit itself, but a software problem that many users have reported.

According to users who reported this issue, The lag occurs when opening the camera app, during shutter delay (the delay to take and save a photo), and even when using camera features in the default camera app.

The good news is that this issue can be fixed with a few simple steps, and this guide is here to walk you through them.

So, let’s dive right in.

Note: Solutions in this guide will work on any Samsung Galaxy S21 model (S21, S21 Plus, S21 Fe, and S21 Ultra models.)

Editor’s note: We created these instructions using a Samsung Galaxy S21 running Android 13. Depending on your device’s software version, some steps and menu positions may look slightly different.

Best working solution to this issue

Go to Settings > Apps > Camera. Then clear the Camera app cache

Fix 01: Clear Camera App Cache

Based on our tests, the most effective solution to address the Samsung Galaxy S21 camera lag is clearing the camera app cache.

The reason is the camera app cache is known for a cache that gets outdated or corrupted easily with unnecessary or corrupted data, which can cause the app to slow down, lag or even crash.

Clearing the cache will remove this unwanted data, allowing the camera app to build a more stable cache. Since this process doesn’t delete any of your photos or videos, you can proceed without worrying about losing them.

Here are the steps to clear your device’s camera app cache:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Apps.
  3. Tap on Camera.

  1. Force stop the camera app.

  2. Then tap on Clear cache.

After clearing the cache, restart your device and test the camera app.

Fix 02: Do a Software Update

According to Sammobile, Samsung has acknowledged the problem and released an update to address this specific issue. This software update not only fixes this issue but brings new security improvements to your device.

Therefore, if you haven’t updated your device to the latest software version, it is highly recommended to do so.

Follow the steps below to update your Samsung Galaxy S21:

  1. Head over to Settings.
  2. Tap on Battery and device care.

Note: Ensure your device has enough battery (at least 50%) before starting the update process. This is to prevent any interruptions during the update.

Fix 03: Clear Camera App Data (Reset Settings)

If you are still experiencing a lag in the camera app, then it could be due to misconfigurations or corrupted app data. By clearing the app data, you can reset the camera app settings and fix the problem.

The steps to clear the camera app data are relatively same as clearing the app cache. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Select Camera
  3. Go to Storage.
  4. Tap on Clear data.

Fix 04: Use a Third-Party Camera App

A few third-party camera apps

This is not the ideal solution as it involves relying on an external application rather than the built-in camera app that is optimized for your Samsung Galaxy S21. However, it can be a temporary workaround until Samsung releases a more permanent fix.

There are a few third-party camera apps available on the Google Play Store that offer useful features and can potentially bypass the lag issue you’re experiencing with the default camera app.

Some of the highly recommended ones include Open Camera, Camera MX, and Camera FV-5. These apps have been praised for their user-friendly interfaces, diverse features, and smooth performance.

Here’s how you can download and use a third-party camera app:

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Samsung Galaxy S21.
  2. In the search bar, type in the name of the camera app you wish to download (e.g., Open Camera).
  3. Click on the app from the search results and then click on Install.
  4. Once the app is installed, open it and give it the necessary permissions to access your camera and storage.
  5. Start using the app to take pictures and see if the lag issue is fixed.

Once again, this is a temporary solution, and we recommend switching back to the default camera app once Samsung has addressed the issue with a software update.

Camera still laggy on my S21. Now using the open camera app which is doing a lot better. Just a shame I can’t use the stock Samsung one.

Glad you found a workaround Chris! Yes it can be frustrating when a flagship device doesn’t deliver the performance it promised. But wait until a new update roll out.
