Samsung Galaxy smartphones come with a built-in Samsung keyboard which may be the keyboard you use on your Galaxy S22 smartphone. Besides that, there are other keyboard apps that you can download and use on Google Play Store.

Whatever keyboard app it is that you use, what if your Samsung Galaxy S22 keyboard disappears and you cannot get it back on?

If that is your case, then this guide will give you a solution to the keyboard not showing/disappearing issues on your smartphone.

Note: Solutions in this guide will work on any Samsung Galaxy S22 model (S22, S22 Plus, S22 Fe, and S22 Ultra models.)

Editor’s note: We created these instructions using a Samsung Galaxy S22 running Android 12. Depending on your device’s software version, some steps and menu positions may look slightly different.

Why the Keyboard is Not Showing Up On My Samsung Galaxy S22?

The keyboard is like any other app on your Galaxy smartphone, but unlike other apps, you can only access it by tapping on a text area. So first, you need to ensure that you try to get the keyboard by tapping on a specific text area.

If the keyboard app does not appear even after you tap on a text area, there can be a couple of reasons for that issue to occur. The most common reason is corrupted data/cache files on the keyboard app.

The other reasons are:

  • Accidentally tapping the keyboard hide button,
  • Third-party keyboard apps blocking the default app you use,
  • Insufficient RAM and storage space,
  • App bugs,
  • And common cache data issues on your Galaxy smartphone.

Fix 01: Change Samsung Keyboard as Default Keyboard

No other keyboard app works best with your Galaxy S22 than the default Samsung keyboard. If you currently use another keyboard as the default try Samsung keyboard as the default keyboard to see if the problem is with the third-party keyboard.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to General management.
  3. Tap on “Keyboard list and default.”

  1. Make sure the Samsung keyboard is under the “Default keyboard” (or the third-party keyboard app you want to be the default keyboard), and

  1. If not, tap the “Default keyboard” and select the keyboard you want.
Choose default keyboard

Fix 02: Restart Your Device

Have you tried to restart your device? If not, give it a try. By restarting, you allow the system and apps to refresh. This can fix temporary glitches or accidental hide that makes the keyboard on your Galaxy S22 disappear.

If you do not know, there is an easy way to restart your device. Press and hold the power button + volume down button for a few seconds.

Force restart samsung

Another thing to remember is that sometimes restarting can only temporarily fix the problem. If the keyboard still does not show after a restart, follow the other solutions below.

Fix 03: Clear Keyboard Cache and Data

If restarting did not work, you can try to clear the cache and data (if necessary) to fix the keyboard-not-showing issue.

Clearing the cache forces the keyboard app to build cache data again, thus, solving the issue.

Here is how to Clear Samsung Keyboard app cache:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap the filer button and toggle on “Show system apps”.
Show system apps
  1. Scroll down and find the “Samsung keyboard“. Tap on it.

  1. Go to Storage. Tap the “Clear cache” button.

  1. Open the message app or notepad app and try to type to see if it works.

To clear other keyboard app caches, follow the same procedure.

Note: If clearing the cache did not work, you can try to fix the problem by clearing the data of the keyboard app. The problem with this is if you clear the data of the keyboard app, you will lose all the suggestions and words saved in the keyboard. If that is okay with you, then go ahead.

Fix 04: Disable Driving Mode

Google Assistant has a feature called “Driving mode” and you can only get the work done by voice when this is enabled. No keyboard app will work while your Galaxy S22 is in driving mode.

Now, you might think you have not enabled this mode by yourself but the driving mode gets enabled automatically when you use Google maps and, also, by voice commands.

Follow these steps to disable driving mode:

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap the profile icon at the top right corner.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Tap on “Navigation settings”.
  5. Tap the “Google Assistant settings”.
  6. Tap the “when navigating in Google Maps” to turn off night mode.

  1. Restart your phone.

Fix 05: Update the Keyboard App

You can update the keyboard app to fix its bugs and glitches that make it disappear.

  1. Go to Google Play Store.
  2. Type the keyboard app name you use.
  3. From the results, select the keyboard app.
  4. Tap the “Update” button.

If you use the Samsung keyboard, you can also update the app from the Galaxy Store. Open the Galaxy Store app and from the menu, select “Updates.”

Fix 06: Turn Off Keyboard Hide Button

If you are using the Samsung keyboard, there is a button on your keyboard that can make it hide or disappear. It can be helpful to see the content covered by the keyboard app, but oftentimes, it gets accidentally touched and makes the keyboard disappear.

To fix this, you can turn off this hidden button on your Samsung keyboard, and here is how you can do that:

  1. Go to Settings > Display.
Display settings
  1. Tap the “Navigation bar”.
Display - navigation bar
  1. Toggle off the “Show button to hide keyboard”.

  1. Restart the phone.

Fix 07: Check the Storage

If your problem persists, you should check the storage on your Galaxy S22. If the storage is almost full, certain apps and services might not work due to caching issues. Therefore, if you see the storage warning sign on the notification bar, check the storage and free some space for the keyboard app to work properly.

Fix 08: Switch to a Third-Party Keyboard

If you are still facing the keyboard-not-showing issue and none of the above solutions worked, then you can use another keyboard app.

There are a few keyboard apps that you might like to use on your Galaxy S22. Check these out:
