It can be incredibly annoying seeing the camera app crashes when you are about to capture a perfect moment with your Samsung Galaxy S21 camera. This could happen while you’re trying to open the camera app, or worse, in the middle of using it.

There are 3 main reasons why the camera app on Galaxy S21 keeps crashing. Those are software glitches, outdated device software, and issues with the camera app‘s cache or data.

This issue is not only annoying but also disruptive, and that is why, we have compiled a comprehensive guide for you to troubleshoot and resolve this problem. Keep reading…

Note: Solutions in this guide will work on any Samsung Galaxy S21 model (S21, S21 Plus, S21 Fe, and S21 Ultra models.)

Editor’s note: We created these instructions using a Samsung Galaxy S21 running Android 13. Depending on your device’s software version, some steps and menu positions may look slightly different.

Best working solution for this issue

Go to Settings > Apps. Select Camera app and clear its data.

Fix 01: Clear Camera App Cache

Clearing the cache of your camera app is the most straightforward and effective method to fix the crashing issue.

The reason is, the cache, a storage area in your device where temporary data is stored to quickly retrieve it when needed may get cluttered with redundant data, causing the app to malfunction or crash.

Note: This action will not delete any of your photos or videos. So don’t worry and just go ahead.

Here’s how to clear the camera app cache:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Apps.
  3. Tap on Camera.

  1. Force stop the camera app.
  2. Go to Storage.
  3. Tap on Clear cache.

Once you’ve done this, open the camera app again. The issue will be resolved now.

Fix 02: Update Device Software

As we said earlier, Outdated device software is another reason why the camera app crashes when using it. The software of your device is the brain that controls all the applications, including the camera app. So it is obvious that when it’s not updated, won’t be able to manage the apps correctly, leading to crashes.

Note: Ensure that your device is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network and has enough battery power before you start the update process.

Here’s how you can update your device software:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Battery and device care.

  1. Tap on Software update.

  1. Then, tap on Download and install.

Fix 03: Clear Camera App Data

Clearing the camera app data is another effective fix to get rid of the crashing issue. But before going into the steps, let’s understand the difference between the camera app data and camera app cache.

Camera App Data vs Camera App Cache The app data includes all the settings and files associated with the app. On the other hand, the cache is a subset of this data that the app generates over time to load things faster.

Therefore, while clearing the cache can solve temporary issues, clearing the app data is more of a “hard reset” for the app.

Here’s how you can clear the camera app data on your Samsung Galaxy S21:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Apps.
  3. Select Camera app.
  4. Go to Storage.
  5. Tap on Clear data.

This will reset your camera app to its factory settings. If the issue was due to any corrupted data or misconfigured settings, this should fix it immediately.

Fix 04: Do a Factory Data Reset

The abovementioned solutions should work for most cases. However, if none of the above solutions has worked for you, the last resort is to do a factory data reset.

A factory data reset, (master reset), reverts your device back to its original state as when it was first purchased. This means all data, settings, downloaded apps, and personal information will be erased. This is by far the best solution to resolve any serious underlying issues causing the camera app or any app to crash as it removes any conflicts or corrupted data that might have occurred over time.

However, before proceeding with a factory data reset, back up your data. You can back up your data using our guide from here.

Here’s how to perform a factory data reset on your Samsung Galaxy S21:

  1. Head over to Settings > General management.
  2. Tap on Reset.
Reset option samsung
  1. Under the reset menu, tap on Factory data reset.
Factory data reset
  1. Enter the lock screen password if prompted, and then confirm.
  2. Tap on ‘Delete all’. Your device will restart and begin the factory data reset process.
