If you are a Samsung Galaxy S21 user and are experiencing the camera app keeps opening automatically, not only you but this annoying issue has been reported by many other users.

While we were researching this, we found out that this occurs especially when unlocking the device. Some users have even reported the camera turning on when they press the power button when the device’s screen is turned off.

This issue is most likely due to a misconfiguration in settings or a glitch in the camera app. The good news is that it can be solved easily. In this guide, we will walk you through these fixes that can help you resolve this. Let’s get started!

Note: Solutions in this guide will work on any Samsung Galaxy S21 model (S21, S21 Plus, S21 Fe, and S21 Ultra models.)

Editor’s note: We created these instructions using a Samsung Galaxy S21 running Android 13. Depending on your device’s software version, some steps and menu positions may look slightly different.

Fix 01: Clear the Camera App Cache

The camera app, like any other app on Android smartphones, stores temporary data and files in a cache area. This cache can sometimes cause glitches or issues with the app’s functionality,

Clearing the camera app’s cache will resolve these issues by eliminating any potentially corrupted or outdated files.

Here’s how to clear the camera app cache:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Apps.
  3. Tap on Camera.

  1. Go to Storage.

  1. Tap on Clear cache.

After clearing the cache, restart your device and check if the issue has been fixed

Fix 02: Check the Side Key Settings

The side key on your Samsung Galaxy S21, (also known as the power key), can be customized to perform user-preferred actions. By default, this key is set to activate the Bixby voice assistant when long-pressed.

However, if you’ve noticed that your camera app opens when you press the side key, it’s possible that the key has been set to open the camera app.

This misconfiguration could be the reason why your camera turns on when you press the side key, even if your device’s screen is turned off. But you can easily check and modify the side key settings to resolve this issue.

Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Advanced features.
  3. In the Advanced features menu, tap on Side key.

  1. You’ll see two triggers – Press and hold, and Double press.
  2. To prevent the camera app from opening, select any other function to trigger under Double press and under Press and hold.

Fix 03: Clear Camera App Data

This is different from the camera cache. The data stored by the camera app includes settings, preferences, and personalizations you’ve made within the app.

Clearing the camera app data will reset the app to its original state, as it was when you first got your device. This will eliminate any misconfigurations or glitches that have developed over time.

However, keep in mind that this will also remove any personal settings you’ve made within the camera app.

Follow the steps below to clear the camera app data on your Galaxy S21:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Select Camera.

  1. Go to Storage.

  1. Tap on Clear data.

Fix 04: Update Device Software

If your device software is outdated, the system will be more prone to glitches. Therefore, the issues you encounter on your device might be due to outdated software.

Developers regularly release updates to fix bugs. If your Galaxy S21’s camera still keeps opening on its own even after trying the above solutions, run a system update to fix the issue.

You can update your device software by following the steps below:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on Battery and device care.

  1. Tap on Software update.

  1. Then, tap on Download and install.

Before updating your device, ensure that it is charged or connected to a power source to prevent any interruptions during the update process.

Fix 05: Reset All Settings

Resetting all settings on your Samsung Galaxy S21 is the last resort if none of the above solutions works. This will restore all the system settings back to their original defaults, eliminating any leftover misconfigurations that might be causing the camera to turn on automatically.

Follow the steps below to reset all settings:

  1. Head over to Settings.
  2. Go to General management.
  3. Tap on Reset.
Reset option samsung
  1. Tap on Reset all settings.
Reset all settings
  1. Confirm.
