Near Field Communication (NFC) is a handy feature that allows for contactless payment methods, data transfer, and connecting to NFC-enabled devices. While NFC is a great tool for Samsung Galaxy S21 users, some have reported that the NFC is not working on their devices and they cannot make payments.

Are you facing the same issue? If so, you’ve come to the right place. In this guide, we’ll walk you give you 5 solutions to fix the NFC. Each fix is explained with step-by-step instructions.

Fix 01: Clear NFC Service Data

The NFC service on your Galaxy S21 is the component that handles all the operations related to NFC. This includes facilitating contactless payments and device pairing. If the data associated with this service gets corrupted, it prevents the NFC feature from functioning properly.

To fix this, you need to clear the NFC service data. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Navigate to Settings.
  2. Tap on Apps.
  3. Toggle on “Show system apps”.

  1. Tap on “NFC”

  1. Go to Storage.
  2. Tap on Clear data.

Once you have cleared the data, restart your Galaxy S21. This will allow the changes to take effect and resolve any issues with the NFC feature.

Fix 02: Refresh NFC

Refreshing the NFC is a simple yet effective fix to the NFC not working issue. This can be done by toggling the NFC off and then back on, essentially resetting the NFC system.

Here are the steps on how to do it:

  1. Go to the Settings menu.
  2. Tap on Connections.
  3. Tap on “NFC and contactless payment”.

  1. Now, you will see a toggle switch next to NFC. If it’s already on, switch it off.
  2. Wait for a few seconds and then toggle the switch back on.

You can also do this by simply swiping down the top of your screen and bringing up the notification panel.

Fix 03: Remove the Back Cover

Remove the back cover

The back cover of your Galaxy S21 could also be the culprit behind the NFC not working issue. This is because certain types of back covers, especially those made of metal or containing metallic elements interfere with the NFC functionality.

NFC relies on an electromagnetic field to communicate, which is disrupted by metal. Therefore, remove the back cover of your device and try using NFC again to see if it works.

It’s important to note that the positioning of your phone to use NFC also matters. You need to make sure the back of your phone is placed as close as possible to the NFC reader or the other NFC-enabled device. The NFC antenna in your Galaxy S21 is located near the top of the device, so aim to align this area with the reader or device.

Fix 04: Select Your Payment as Default Payment Service

If your device does not recognize your preferred payment method as the default service for contactless payment, the NFC won’t function as it should.

To resolve this, you need to set your preferred payment service (like Google Pay, Samsung Pay, etc.) as the default payment service. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on Connections.
  3. Then, tap on NFC and contactless payments.
  4. Toggle on Samsung Pay/Google Pay.

Once you’ve done this, use the NFC feature again.

Fix 05: Update Device Software

Having an updated system software is important for the proper functioning of NFC. If there is a bug in the software or if it is outdated, you can update your Galaxy S21 and make the NFC work easily.

Here’s how to update your Galaxy S21:

  1. Head over to Settings.
  2. Tap on Battery and device care.
