There are many ways to increase the internet speed (download and upload speeds) on a smartphone, but for Samsung Galaxy S20, there are 4 best ways to do that. These are:
- Switching to a 5G network.
- Using a WiFi router with an Antenna.
- Use a Speed test app to determine what place has the best reception.
- Reduce the number of apps sharing the bandwidth.
In this guide, I will give you step-by-step instructions to follow and apply the above 4 methods on your Galaxy S20 smartphone.
Jumps Into
01. Switch to a 5G Network
If you are on a 4G network, the maximum speed you can reach is 50 Mbps for upload and 50 Mbps for download. But if you switch to 5G you will get up to 20 gigabits per second (Gbps) for downloads and 10 Gbps for uploads.
If your carrier (network provider) supports 5G, contact them to get a 5G SIM card or an eSIM. Most of the providers now support 5G so if you are located in the US or a European country you should be able to upgrade to the new 5G network.
Once you have obtained the 5G SIM, you can follow the steps to turn on 5G on your phone:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap on “Connections”.
- Tap on “Mobile networks”.
- Select the network mode as “5G” for your new SIM card.
02. Using a WiFi Router With an Antenna.
Using a WiFi router reduces the battery drain of your phone while speeding up the internet. But you need to choose the right one for your home.
You can choose from ADSL, 4G, 5G, and Fibre optics for a router. The best speed would be from the Fibre optics. However, it would cost you a little more than the other options.
To increase the reception of a WiFi router, you can use an antenna. Network providers usually have these types of antennas to aid the signal reception of their routers. You can contact the customer care of the network provider and ask for a router to be installed on your home.
03. Use a Speed Test App
Internet speed test apps will help you find a sweet spot that has a strong reception. Some of these apps even have features to compare speed test results for each area to figure out the best area for your location.
Best internet speed test apps are:
04. Reduce the Number of Apps Sharing the Bandwidth
Apps run in the background of a smartphone can use the internet bandwidth of the device. This means the more apps using the bandwidth, the less internet speed you would get for the app you need.
To increase the internet speed, you can reduce the background data usage of the apps installed on your phone.
First, figure out which apps use most of the bandwidth, and then restrict their background data usage.
To find the apps that use the internet while running in the background, and restrict their internet access, follow the steps below:
To identify the apps using data in the background:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap on “Connections”.
- Tap on “Data usage”.
- Look for the apps that use most of the data
Once identified, you can restrict the background usage of those apps by following the steps below:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap on “Apps”.
- Find and tap on the app you want to restrict the data usage.
- Tap on “Mobile data”.
- Toggle off “Allow background data usage”.
