Vodafone has developed a new satellite feature that allows video calling directly from Galaxy smartphones. This service was demonstrated by Vodafone engineer Rowan Chesmer, who successfully made the world’s first video call via satellite from a remote area in Wales to Margherita Della Valle, Vodafone Group’s Chief Executive.

The technology operates through AST SpaceMobile’s low-earth orbit satellite constellation, providing mobile broadband connectivity even in areas lacking cellular service. Vodafone’s satellite system delivers download speeds of up to 120Mbps, making it the first service of its kind that offers full mobile broadband connectivity to standard 4G and 5G-equipped smartphones.

Plans are in place to commercially launch this satellite video calling feature later this year, initially available in select European countries, with a broader rollout expected in 2026. This service will be compatible with the latest Samsung Galaxy models.

Vodafone’s press release highlighted the role of five AST SpaceMobile satellites, known as Bluebird 1-5, which are instrumental in testing this mobile broadband connectivity. While competitors like T-Mobile are also exploring similar satellite services in collaboration with Starlink, Vodafone’s offering is set to launch sooner.
